Autumn Greetings!
To my “regulars”, I apologize for my lapse in correspondence. To newcomers, welcome! I hope that you had a nice summer and are ready to transition into autumn.
I had a very interesting summer, and as I explain, you will soon understand my “absence.” Some could say I experienced crisis, yet I prefer to say I experienced blessings.
The school year ended with the joy of seeing my oldest son graduate from high school. He was never one who really liked school. Sports were always what inspired him to do any homework at all; he needed to keep his grades up to stay eligible to play. Sometimes he just squeaked by. So when he walked across that stage, I’m not sure who was most relieved, him or me.
Two weeks after graduation, his grades didn’t matter at all. He was in a freak accident while playing in an All-Star Legion baseball game. Knocked unconscious, he suffered a severe concussion, fractured his skull in multiple places, and broke his nose. The doctors ran 2 CT scans to make sure the bone fragments didn’t penetrate his brain. He ended up having major surgery that planted 4 titanium plates in his forehead.
Three months later, my son has recovered nicely. He just finished 2 weeks in the Firefighting Program at the local community and technical college. I have never seen him so excited to go to school. He even spent $1400 of his own money for firefighting gear for one class.
When I look at what I call his “halo” (the strip that goes from ear to ear where his 51 stitches were and where hair still won’t grow back), I realize how blessed we both are. He is blessed to have escaped permanent brain damage and I am blessed to have escaped thinking I was in charge of his life.
Life is full of lessons. Oh, that we can just open our eyes and see them….
So, what has life been teaching YOU? Read on and see if anything in my newsletter touches a nerve or a heartstring, something that will get you to say, “Oh, yeah! Now I get it!” If you need help in finding the lessons or blessings in life, I’m only a call or an email away: contact me at bev@mycoachbev.com or 701-610-9529!

The Law of Attraction: So…What are YOU Attracting?
Many people have read the book The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. The basic premise of this popular book is that what you focus on, think about, talk about, etc. is what you will get most of in your life. For example, if you always say, “I’m broke. I will never get out of debt.” You are probably right. You will work your way right toward what you just said! If you always say “I feel sick” you will probably have no desire to get out of your PJs or get off the couch. You will feel more pain as the day goes on. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.
On the other hand, if you say, “I am wealthy. I am in control of my spending,” you may find money coming your way. Announce “I feel great!” and you will soon be forgetting your aches and pains. Again, you attract the truth of your words.
The more I read about the Law of Attraction, the more I believe it has its roots in the Bible. Matthew 6:21 states, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew encourages the reader to not waste time on the things that “moths and rust destroy and thieves steal.” Why get worked up about things that don’t matter, the “treasures on earth”, when you can “stockpile treasures in heaven?”
What about you?
When you think about how you spend your time and who you spend time with, what are you attracting? The good, the bad, or the indifferent? What are your treasures, anyway, and where are you stockpiling them?
If you are in the rut of attracting negative people or negative results from your own negative thinking or behaviors, consider hiring a life coach. I have a variety of tools and techniques that can help you move into a more positive mode of thinking and living. Email me at bev@mycoachbev.com for a free sample session.
You have nothing to lose but negative energy!

Let’s NOT Talk about Obesity!
I am really tired of the word “obesity.” Anyone else out there feel the same way? I am sick of hearing about how fat our nation has become, how unhealthy and heavy our children are, and how big we are ALL going to be in the future. It’s demeaning and defeating. And most of all, it’s not like we all decided this was our goal as a nation, and we enjoy this state of affairs! When this trend began, people did not call each other up across the nation and connive to collectively break national records for weight every year. It happened over time from a combination of sedentary lifestyles and highly technological, high-stress, and food-abundant environments. So let’s quit talking about obesity like people have full control over it, okay? It’s more complicated than that.
Did you know that we health professionals are not even in full agreement that obesity is bad? Epidemiologist Stephen Blair states, “There’s too much focus on BMI and body weight,” and he argues that “when it comes to living a long life, it’s better to be fit and fat than thin and sedentary.” The Health Living at Any Size philosophy puts the focus on lifestyle instead of weight. It prefers setting realistic and achievable goals, such as “I will walk 20 minutes daily” over outcome goals, such as “I will lose 20 pounds in 3 months. For more information on this concept, visit www.healthyweightnetwork.com.
My final reason for not wanting to talk about obesity goes back to the Law of Attraction, as discussed above. If we health professionals keep whining about obesity and how heavy our nation is, then is it possible that obesity is what we are attracting for our clientele and even for ourselves? The Law of Attraction states that what you talk about, think about, and believe, soon becomes your life. Hmmm. If given a choice, I prefer to attract wellness.
So to avoid the “O” word I’m going to say these words and phrases instead: love of physical activity, delicious and nutritious foods, life balance, spiritual fulfillment, positive relationships, intellectual stimulation, rewarding life work, quality sleep, hearty laughter, etc. These are the things I want to attract. Care to join me?
It’s easy to get lazy and turn on the tube,
so I am reminded of this great quote:
"The man who doesn't read good books
has no advantage over the man who can't read them."
-- MarkTwain |
And if you have any good books you want to recommend to others, please email me and I will share your comments in our Reader’s Voice, a new section of my E-Letter.
